Solar Energy at the Yoga Ranch
In order to realize Swami Vishnudevananda’s vision of a planet living in peace and harmony, the Sivananda Yoga Ranch is about to embark into a new phase of its history to become energy independent.
For almost four decades, the Sivananda Ashram Yoga Ranch has practiced the yoga principle of social responsibility and integrated ecological sustainability into its operations. As peace begins with compassionate care for all life, the care of the Earth is at the core of our spiritual practice and part of the experience shared with our guests, staff and students. The organic gardens and food forest of the ashram augment our food supply, while we are committed to recycling and composting our waste. The physical design of the ashram is also being modified and renovated according to Permaculture principles.
As the Yoga Ranch is about to celebrate its 40th anniversary, the ashram is moving this vision forward by developing a groundbreaking solar power project: a 463 panel solar array installed on the Ranch’s premises that would provide 100% of its energy needs all year long. The carport array will be installed at the ashram entrance and will be integrated into the ashram’s landscape.
Environmental Benefits of Solar Energy
By installing a solar array, the Yoga Ranch will be doing its part to help reduce global warming, air pollution, natural disasters and ultimately preserve our planet.
It is also hoping to inspire many other individuals and communities to follow the same path to achieve sustainable development and use thenatural resources available to us all.
The array will prevent 90 metric tons of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) from entering the environment. It will produce 127,127 kWh of clean energy every year, which is the equivalent to the annual green house gas emissions from 19 cars or the CO2 emissions from the electricity use of 14 homes in one year.
How to Contribute
The solar array will be installed by RER Energy Group, named one of the top 100 U.S. solar developers by Solar Power World Magazine. Sunvestment Group, a partner of RER Energy Group, will work with the Yoga Ranch to help finance the project, which will be primarily funded by New York state grants, federal tax deductible donations, community investments, and the purchase of investment tax credits for qualified investors.
Such investment tax credits are available through Sunvestment Group’s Community “Purchase Power Agreement” (PPA) - an investment vehicle through which individuals and private companies can participate in the purchase of a solar array, utilizing the resulting tax credits and accelerated depreciation savings that would otherwise not be available to non-profit entities.
To be part of this exciting new project and find out more about investment opportunities for businesses and individuals, please visit the Sunvestment Group site, or visit our Razoo page to make a donation.
